Well done to all our parents, pupils and staff who joined forces for Clean Air Day Scotland 2022 on Thursday 16th June.

Some of our Clean Air Day ambassadors with Environmental Health Officers Caitlin O’Neil and Sarah McDonald.

There was noticeably less congestion outside our school building in the morning due to the number of extra families who used active travel or public transport to get to school.

With our school being situated on a busy main road, every individual journey does add up to make a difference, so thank you to everyone who chose to walk, scoot, cycle, wheel or take the bus – whether this was a one-off or part of your daily routine.

Our P6 ‘Clean Air Day ambassadors’  were on hand to welcome everyone to school.

Here are some pictures of staff, pupils and parents getting involved:

Cllrs Flannery and Pogson talking to members of our Parent Council.

We were grateful for the support of two of our local councillors, Tim Pogson and Pauline Flannery, who came down to talk to children and parents and hear their views about issues such as safe travel to school, air pollution and local transport infrastructure.

As well as the day itself, classes spent time leading up to the event learning about some of the sources and impacts of air pollution, both locally and globally, and ways in which we can reduce or mitigate some of these harmful impacts. We were delighted to welcome City of Edinburgh Council Environmental Health Officers Caitlin O’Neil and Sarah McDonald. Caitlin and Sarah spent time working with our P1-2 and P7 classes to teach them more about air pollution and the work of the Environmental Health Department, and also supported us during Clean Air Day itself.

Finally, pupils also participated in a competition to design their own ‘Clean Air Day’ superhero. Thanks to Councillor Pogson and Councillor Flannery along with our two Environmental Health Officers for judging the competition. Our winners were presented with their prizes by Caitlin and Sarah. Well done to our winners:

Well done also to Daniel in P1 and Pippa in P1/2 – their pictures still to be added.
