The Curriculum in Scotland

At Preston Street, we follow the Scottish curriculum, known as Curriculum for Excellence (CfE for short).

CfE organises all pupils’ learning into eight subjects across four contexts for learning.

The eight curriculum areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics / Numeracy
  • Health and Wellbeing (including PE)
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Technologies
  • Expressive Arts
  • Religious and Moral Education

The four contexts for learning are:

  • Learning in the eight individual subject areas (Literacy; Numeracy; Health and Wellbeing; Social Studies; Science; Religious and Moral Education; Technologies; Expressive Arts)
  • Interdisciplinary learning (learning which covers more than one curricular area at the same time, e.g. a combined Art and Science topic)
  • The ethos and life of the school
  • Opportunities for wider achievement

If you would like to find out more about the curriculum, please download the CfE in a Nutshell leaflet. This is written in ‘parent friendly’ language and contains valuable information about CFE.

Play-Based Learning

In P1/2, we are using a play-based approach. The children will experience adult led-learning, adult initiated learning and child-initiated play.

When the children are involved in this type of play, it supports them to have their own ideas and to be in control of their learning.

It enables them to learn through first-hand experiences and to transfer and apply the knowledge and skills into a context which is meaningful to them.

For further information please see the detailed Family Learning Session on Play-based learning.
