Another fabulous 2 weeks in P1!  We have now finished learning all about numbers to 10 in numeracy through the Number Zoo resource. I wonder if any P1s can tell their adults about the different stories we have heard and the different animals that represent each number.  We will continue to pracise writing the numerals in class, with lots of opportunities to do this in our child-led play!

We have been continuing to focus on phonological awareness and fine motor activities in literacy and will be beginning our ‘Jolly phonics’ scheme next week – so prepare to hear some beautiful singing as we learn ‘a’ and ‘t’!  Muna made an ‘M’ using our peg boards during our fine motor active start, which I thought was very creative! We are also going to be encouraging pupils to continue to practise writing their names so that they start with a capital letter and all the letters are facing the correct way!

Ms Tania has enjoyed writing helicopter stories with the children and we all enjoy acting these out together.  It takes a lot of listening and comprehension skills as well as imagination and teamwork to put on a good play! Every child will get the chance to make up a story and tell it to Ms Tania in their own words and then draw it in our big book, which will be a lovely record of all their hard work and progress throughout the year.

Both P1s and P7s are delighted to have buddies!  Our older friends are helping support the P1s to choose a book from the library and then, once we return to class, share the book together.  P1s then become the experts by leading the P7s in their play and showing them the different activities and areas in the classroom. What brilliant teamwork!  It’s also lovely to hear that our P7s make time to talk to or play with the P1s in the playground too.  They are very nurturing and supportive and are helping to ensure all our youngest members of the school are included (while having fun, themselves too!)

Our story study has been Rainbow fish and this will be continuing over the next couple of weeks.  I expected this to take on an ‘under the sea’ focus, but it seems P1 are also interested in boats, water resistance and floating and sinking, so there will be opportunities for child-led play to facilitate this in the classroom.  (Thank you Cassidy for teaching me to make an origami boat!)

It was lovely to meet so many parents at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ event on Thursday.  It is fabulous to see the parents engage with the play areas and help support their children and great to see so many confident, happy Primary 1s, proudly showing off their classroom!

Thank you P1 for all your hard work!
