At Preston Street pupils have a range of opportunities to participate in music and the arts.

Instrumental Tuition

Pupils receive the opportunity to learn a musical instrument at various points during their time at Preston Street. Whole class instrumental tuition is delivered by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Youth Music Initiative, and by visiting instructors.

Exact provision varies from year to year but in 2022-23, all children from P1-7 participated in one or more of the following:

• drumming
• guitar
• ukulele
• voice

Violin tuition is also offered to some pupils from P4-7 as part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s Instrumental Music Service.

Performance

All our young people are given regular opportunities to perform. The nature of these opportunities may vary from year to year, some examples in the past few years are

• Christmas performances for P1-2, P3-4 and P5-7;
• An Easter musical showcase for P3-6;
• Participation in additional concerts by pupils in receipt of violin tuition;
• A P7 guitar showcase;
• Performance at assemblies, e.g. our annual Burns Assembly.
