Hello everyone and welcome back to another update on what’s been happening in P1/2. As ever it’s been busy with lots happening!

Burns nights

In the run up to Burns night P1/2 learned about Robert Burns and why he is an important figure in Scotland. We enjoyed listening to stories like room on the broom and the Gruffalos wean in Scots and we learned the song heid, shooders, knaps and taes which we performed for the rest of the school at the Burns assembly. We also enjoyed making our own tartan kilts to wear to the Burns assembly and practising our ceilidh dancing.

Literacy

During January we also learned about Scottish foods and we used these to help us during writing lessons. The children have been learning about how to use adjectives in their writing so we decided to write some descriptive sentences about some Scottish foods. The children all enjoyed eating their oatcakes and came up with lots of adjectives to describe how they looked, tasted etc. In phonics the P2s are working hard on their vowel digraphs to help them read and spell longer words. The P1s have almost finished block 1 of Literacy rich where they learn their initial sounds. Over the last few weeks we have covered the j, c, k and l sounds. The p1s are becoming more confident blending the letter sounds together to help them read 3 letter words. They are also becoming more confident at hearing the sounds in a word and spelling these out on their magnetic whiteboards. Both the P1s and the P2s have been working hard on learning to read and write their tricky words (words that you cannot sound out).

Maths

For the first few weeks of the term we focused on time and learning to read time on an analogue clock. Over the last 2 weeks however we have returned to our number learning. The P1s have been busy learning to count up to 20 and to order numbers in that range. They have also been working on their counting on strategy to add. Some of the P2s have been learning to count up to 50 while others have been counting up to 100. The P2s have been working on ordering numbers and counting on to add within those ranges.

Health and well- being

In our health and well-being lessons we have been learning about similarities and differences and what makes us all unique. We enjoyed playing lots of fun games like me too to explore our similarities and differences. We also created our own self portraits to show that we are all unique.

PE

Over the last 2 weeks we have been focusing on two key skills: running and dribbling a ball. We also enjoy our cosmic kids yoga adventures in the classroom.

Special Art project with Miss Tania

Miss Tania our class early years practitioner noticed that lots of the children were enjoying experimenting with the paints during free play time. She decided to encourage this by introducing the children to the artist Jackson Pollock  and his action painting style. During outdoor learning the children were given the opportunity to try out some action painting of their own and they loved it! They created a huge action painting which we have used as part of our valentines day display. On Thursday the children created their own hearts which we added to the action painting to create our valentines day display.

Outdoor learning

Here are some pictures of the children during our outdoor learning sessions.

Learning journals

As many of you are now aware we will be moving to using online learning journals after the February break so this will be the last blog post for P1/2. I will be posting similar updates on learning journals after the February break. I hope you all have a lovely half term. Miss Groarke x
