Good Morning 6s!
I’ve been having a blast seeing what you posted in the Home Learning Grid channel. So, I thought I’d post a bit of your work here. Jobs very well done!
Here’s some cool facts about lighthouses:
- The first one was built in 279 BC in Egypt and is one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world! I can’t visit that one because it’s gone now.
- The Tower of Hercules in Spain is currently the oldest still working lighthouse. I haven’t been there yet.
- Originally lighthouses were lit with an open fire, and lighthouse keepers had to keep the fire going.
- In some towns, people would stand on or near beaches with fires to pretend they were lighthouses. They were trying to draw ships into rocks so they could get the cargo when the ship wrecked.
- The Statue of Liberty was originally designed as a lighthouse for the Suez Canal.
- I grew up in Michigan in America. It gets REALLY cold there in the winter. So, cold that the St Joseph Lighthouse ends up completely encased in ice every winter. I’ve seen this lighthouse in the summer. It’s very pretty all year round.
Have a lovely weekend everyone! Should be sunny and beautiful.
