Hello everyone and Happy new Year!
I hope everyone had a restful holiday period. It has as always been a very busy couple of weeks in P1/2! This half term we are doing a big focus on time, seasons and festivals. Our key story this half term is the Stickman story by Julia Donaldson.
Maths
This half term we are doing a big focus on time. We are looking at seasons, days of the week, months of the year, how calendars work and how to read time on analogue and digital clocks. We created our own class calendar and added significant events like birthdays and religious events to it. The P1s really enjoyed creating their own clocks during the week and finding out how clocks work. Next week P1s will be looking at reading and making o’clock and half past times on analogue and digital clocks. P2s will be looking at reading and making quarter past and quarter to times on analogue and digital clocks.
Literacy
This term we are all continuing with our phonics learning. P1s are finishing off Block 1 of Literacy Rich where they look at letter sounds. So far this term the P1s have looked at the u,b and l sounds. The P1s are now using their sounds knowledge to read and write cvc words or 3 letter words like dog, bat and leg. This week the P1s also had a go at writing a short sentence with a capital letter and a full stop. The P1s loved this challenge and many of the children wrote 3-4 sentences! In P2 we are working on Block 2 of Literacy Rich where we looked at vowel digraphs (2 letters making one sound). This week some of the children have been working on the oa sound while others looked at the oi and oy sound. P2s have also been focusing on sentence writing this week. Next week we will be looking at adjectives and how we can use these to improve our sentences.
Topic
This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year which takes place on Sunday 22nd January. We listened to the origin story of the festival and learned how people celebrate Chinese new year around the world and in Scotland. As 2023 is the year of the rabbit we made some rabbit themed Chinese New Year cards for our friends and family. I know lots of families in our community celebrate Chinese New Year and we wish them a very happy New Year and hope that you all enjoy the celebrations. Next week we are going to be looking at all things Scots and Scottish for Burns night!

Sumdog
Sumdog is an online Maths resource that we use throughout the school. Children use it at school and can play it at home if they wish. Children do not need to do it at home it is optional. I have attached their password to the front cover of their reading records if you would like to access Sumdog from home.
Reading books
All children now have a reading book and a reading record. New reading books are handed out on Mondays and old one are returned on that day too. If you have any further questions about reading books please come chat to me.
