Literacy

We have been continuing to learn the Literacy Rich Block 2 sounds and tricky words.

We have been learning the sounds: oi, oy, ou & ow (cow). We have been learning the tricky words, ‘were, there, into & here’ We have also been continuing to develop our writing by drawing clear and detailed pictures and sharing a sentence. We have been continuing reading with our reading books and learning the ORT key words. We have also been practising writing our names in cursive, remembering a capital letter at the start.

Maths
We have been learning about money. We have been learning about the coins and notes which we use in Scotland. We have also been learning about bank cards and ATMs. We have been exploring the coins and what they look. We have also been learning about the value of money and have started to count amounts of money and to make amounts of money. We will continue to develop our understanding of this next week.

IDL
Last week we did a mini space topic. The role play area was turned into a space station! We learned about the different planets in our solar system and what it is like to be an astronaut! We enjoyed some space themed drama with Miss Higgins! We had to pretend to be astronauts preparing for a trip to space! We did some space themed art. We used oil pastels to draw a space scene, we explored what happened when we rubbed the oil pastel and did some blending. We also turned ourselves into astronauts using a photo of our faces and the body of an astronaut, some of us made scared faces at the thought of going into space!
This week we have listened to some stories being read by real astronauts on board the International Space Station! This was really cool! It was interesting to see inside the ISS and to see the astronauts and the story books floating about!
This week we have started a Farming topic. We have been learning about farming in Scotland, about different kinds of farms and about jobs on the farm. We will continue our farm topic next week.

Outdoor Learning
We have enjoyed visiting the outdoor learning area in the playground. We have enjoyed playing with the water, we have been moving it from one place to another using pots and different containers and pouring and watching the water travel through the pipes on the water wall. We have been using the bungee cords to lift the pallets off the ground. We have been blowing bubbles and watching them float away or pop! We have also had fun trying to pop the bubbles being blown!

Holyrood Park
We visited Holyrood Park this week. We played hide and seek and what’s the time Mr Wolf, then we were given a sheet with photos of some things which could be found within the area. We had to look hard to find these, we were looking for moss, lichen, nettles, new plants and other things. We had to use our observation skills to find these! Afterwards we had time for some free play.

Play
We have been playing together and creating lots of artwork and creations with the construction. We have enjoyed playing with the big van and car and have been taking turns to drive these around the classroom. We have been spending time playing board games together, taking turns and following the rules of the game.

P.E.

We now have 2 P.E. slots a week. Our new P.E. days are a Wednesday and a Friday. This week, we have developing our side stepping and ball rolling and trap skills. We practised side stepping on our own and then with a partner, it was tricky to keep our body sidey ways! We practised rolling the ball to our partner who had to try and stop the ball with the ball of their foot, once we had mastered this we tried to stop and trap the ball with different parts of our body. We used our heads, elbows, hands, tummies, bottoms, knees and feet. We had to be very careful so as not to hurt ourselves on the floor. We had great fun and found this very funny!

Stick People Creations

We made heads for our stick men and women using clay. We made the stick person during one of our recent Holyrood Park visits. We used a pencil to make the features on our clay head and then attached the head to the stick body using water and clay then we left it overnight to dry.
