P1A have settled well back into the routines and life of school. It has been lovely all being back together again!
Literacy
We have been continuing learning the Literacy Rich block 2 sounds. We started to learn these during home learning with Miss Ritty, we learnt ‘sh, ch, th, wh, ai, ay’. In school we have been learning ‘ee, ea, igh, -y, oa, ow (snow)’. When sounds are made using 2 or 3 letters we call these ‘special friends’. We have also been learning tricky words (words which can’t be sounded out using our phonics). We have learnt ‘go, be, she, are, they’ during home learning. We have learnt ‘all, some, come, said, one, you’ at school.
We have started reading in school. We discuss the story and predict what we think will happen. We are learning the key words for each stage/book to help us with our reading. Most of the words are sight words which can’t be sounded out.
Please remember to bring your reading book to school everyday.
New books are issued on a Monday and are returned on a Thursday.

Numeracy
We have been working on our number bonds to 10 in class and have been practising counting forwards and backwards within different number ranges.
We have been trying to add 2 amounts together by counting on from the first number, trying to remember not to count the starting number. We are looking at dot patterns and thinking about what we can see within the pattern e.g. 6 dots, 3 and 3, 2,2 and 2. to get a feel of how different numbers are made.
We have been learning about equal sharing and making equal groups using cubes or counters.

Topic
We have been learning about Weather and Seasons. We have been learning how rainbows are made and that there are different kinds of clouds. We have enjoyed some science experiments related to our topic learning. We enjoyed making clouds in a jar, using water, shaving foam and blue food colouring. We also enjoyed growing a rainbow, using felt tip pens, kitchen roll and water. We also made a rainbow inside using a glass of water, light from a torch and a piece of paper. We were lucky enough to see several different small rainbows appear on the paper!

STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths)
We made balloon powered cars! We used cardboard, straws, balloons and bottle lids as wheels. We had to try and blow up the balloon through the straw (this was hard work) then the car drove along the ground.

P.E.
We are enjoying a weekly P.E. session in the playground. We have been playing games, working in small teams and in pairs.
Holyrood Park
We are enjoying our weekly Monday visits to Holyrood Park. We have been playing hide and seek, creating homes for wildlife using natural resources from the wood, building 2D and 3D models, climbing trees and having some time for free play!

Outdoor Play
We have had lots of opportunities to enjoy play in the mud kitchen area of the playground. We have enjoyed playing with the water and transporting it in different tubs and containers and have been working together to create potions and drinks. We have enjoyed making food and drinks for each other at the kitchen area. Making assault courses with the loose parts has been very popular too! We have enjoyed exploring the art resources and being creative with these! We made bracelets, Christmas decorations, handbags and lots more!

Play
We have enjoyed using the capes, masks and our imagination to role play superheroes in the classroom! We have also been showing how to look after babies when playing with the dolls. The train set has been popular with people working together to create a long train track that went all the way around the classroom!
