We had an enjoyable morning in Holyrood Park developing our practical measurement skills. We were creating various rectangles and triangles with different areas, and exploring ways in which we can create different shapes which contain the same number of square metres. Practical ‘hands on’ activities such as these are essential if pupils are to develop a full understanding of shape and how it relates to other areas of mathematics.
We also had a very interesting investigation into the difference between ‘square metres’ and ‘metres squared’ – these two terms are often used interchangeably but in fact they are not exactly the same as each other.
Before we returned to class to complete some follow up work, we took a short walk to a couple of viewpoints on the side of Arthur’s Seat, and spent some time relaxing and enjoying the views – making the most of the excellent visibility and enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits which come from being outdoors in the natural environment.
Thanks to everyone for an enjoyable morning!
