The children in P5 have enjoyed working with the student teacher, Mr Cameron over the last few weeks. They have all worked really well in their cooperative groups to research and present some amazing facts about the planets in the solar system. The class have also carried out some fantastic chemical changes experiments and are looking forward to carrying out some more during the summer term. I have added a selection of photographs from the science topic.

Mr Anderson organized a fantastic interfaith road show at the school on Friday the 20th May. The children were very respectful learning about a variety of other world religions. It was great to see the children so engaged and asking thought provoking questions as they moved between each table. Well done!

Mr Cameron had the children on their toes when he asked them to write instructions on how to make a healthy sandwich with a practical demonstration thrown in! There was much hilarity and fun as Mr Cameron asked some of the children to read out their instructions until they all realised how detailed instructions need to be, even for a healthy sandwich!

Nina and Eryn teaching the class, how professional! I might ask them to take over during the final week of term! Well done girls, great for the confidence and presenting skills. Looks like the children are listening too!!

It was great for the children to join up with the P6 and P7 classes for a proper Friday assembly in person with Mr Hoyle last week. Everyone listened and contributed well and we all sang a lovely song about resilience and positivity. Let’s hope this continues….

We are looking forward to the last few weeks of school, it’s been a whirlwind of a year and all of the children in the class have been amazing. In maths, we are consolidating knowledge of the four number concepts and using our cooperative learning groups for problem solving. We will also be undertaking sequences of work in fractions, decimals and percentages as well as some fun practical activities with 2D/3D shape.

In literacy we will be continuing to read ‘The BFG’ as the class novel and hopefully watch the film at the end of term! There will be a focus on imaginative writing and comprehension, linked to our topic on the solar system. Furthermore, we will be learning about how to write an effective report as well as a continuation of the school spelling programme.

We are looking forward to the sports day in the meadows and our focus this term in PE will be athletics, gymnastics and team games. There will be circle time activities and the continuation of the relationships, sexual health and parenthood programme. Furthermore, the children will have opportunities to discuss their feelings about moving up to P6. In expressive arts, the class will be continuing with drumming, ukulele, violin as well as drama activities linked to the science topic. As well as a focus on the planets in science, the children will be learning about astronaut pioneers, chemical changes and the human body. We are also planning to make moon buggies using recycled material as a group task. In RME, the class will be learning about places of worship and the development of beliefs/values. We will also be continuing with Spanish and Mr Cameron has taught the class about British sign language.

Some of the children in the class rehearsed and played their violins for Mr Cameron on his last day as well as making him a lovely 3D card that was very impressive! We are looking forward to the summer concert and achievement assemblies at the end of term too.

Take care everyone,

Mr Durkin.
